Séamus Kirk was elected Ceann Comhairle on 13 October 2009 having previously been Chairman of the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party from 2002.
Séamus Kirk was first elected to the Dáil in November 1982. In March 1987 he was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, with special responsibility for Horticulture, and served in that capacity until February 1992.
During the 28th Dáil, Séamus Kirk was appointed as Chairman of the European Affairs Committee; a member of the All-Party Committee on the Constitution and also a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Local Government.
Séamus Kirk was a member of the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation from 1994 to 1996 and was also a member of the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body.
During the years 1974 to 1985, Séamus Kirk served as a member of Louth County Council; Louth County Committee of Agriculture and the East Border region Committee.
The Ceann Comhairle has been a member of the Gaelic Athletic Association
since 1958 and also of many county organisations.
